What's in a Name?

The Order has gone by many names in its history (see here), but the universal moniker "Golden Dawn" (at first a closely-guarded secret, with just the letters G.D. being revealed publicly) has remained a beacon for seekers of the Light.

But what about the other parts of our name? We provide below the relevant extracts from our Mission Statement, highlighting why we adopted these descriptors:

Ancient

“Ancient, as harking back to and embodying those principles, teachings and traditions that have existed from time immemorial, and honouring both the tradition and our forefathers and foremothers, without which and whom we would not be here today; and in so doing connect to that wellspring of knowledge and occult truth from which all things come.”

Honourable

“Honourable, as embracing and upholding the honourable route as much as possible in all aspects of our lives, but particularly within the Order, never to degrade ourselves or our magic with dark deeds or petty squabbles, nor to let our teachings and tradition be abused through misuse, ignorance or neglect; and so in tending to render those who follow the precepts of this tradition as honourable members not only of the Order, but of the human race.”
